More promotions meant an even bigger house. The Kaplin estate was starting to look more like Connor had always pictured it.
Connor was delighted to throw a party in his baby girl’s first birthday, especially when it gave him the chance to show off his new moves – which looked remarkably like his old moves.
And the first child of our second generation has evolved!
The theme for names this generation, as chosen by this narrator’s boyfriend, was villains. Thus, Harley is named after Harley Quinn.
Connor did not enjoy every aspect of being a parent. Especially when his child seemed so much smarter than he, himself, was.
‘Come on, dad,’ Harley said, giggling. ‘Just give up, I’ve almost got you at checkmate already!’
I’d like to take a moment to appreciate the family’s maid at that time. Look at him.
‘Oh Purple Man, you’ll never defeat my evil genius!’ Harley mocked the little action figure.
She was quite the clever little cookie and was progressing nicely in her childhood aspirations and skills.
Then one night, the incident happened…
Our intrepid founder did not quite like being on fire, his wife did not know how to cope, and his daughter… well, she took a moment to take in exactly what was going on.
As mother and daughter ran outside to shout, point, and generally be useless, instead of helping inside, I gave up on the hopes of this legacy being a success.
‘Oh no,’ our founder cried, barely able to take in the sight of his fire-soaked skin. ‘I’m done for!’
And he was right.
Enter Death, every narrator’s enemy and best friend.
Yuki recovered enough to run indoors and plead for Connor’s life, risking life and limb by standing before the fire.
‘Please, Mr Death, please!’ she cried. ‘He’s an idiot and all, but he’s my idiot .’
‘Oh, hey,’ Connor said, inspecting himself. ‘This is a surprise.’
His first order of business was to put out the fire.
‘I survived death!’
‘Hey! Don’t do that again until I’m old and lived my life!’ Connor shouted, confronting Death himself, who shrugged it off.
The following evening, after everything had settled down and gone back to normal, Yuki had something exciting to tell Connor.
’I’m pregnant again!’
Connor was a little more excited this time around.
‘That’s great, honey!’ he said. ‘But isn’t one enough?’
